Sea Shepherd's Captain Peter Hammarstedt had the honor of being invited to Jakarta by the Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries to speak about 'Enforcement at the High Seas' at a high-level panel workshop on "Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing and Organized Crimes in the Fishing Industry".
Opened by the Honorable Susi Pudjiastuti, Indonesia's famed Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries - whose assertive and no-nonsense stance against illegal fishing has resulted in the sinking of over 500 criminal vessels by Indonesian authorities - the high-level panel also included speakers from Global Fishing Watch, Pew Charitable Trust and INTERPOL. In 2018, Sea Shepherd through its partnership with the United Republic of Tanzania to combat fisheries crime, assisted international law enforcement efforts that saw the apprehension of the poaching vessel 'STS-50' by the Indonesian Navy. Captain Hammarstedt also spoke to law enforcement officers from Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania and Indonesia at a special training for participants at the International Fish FORCE Academy of Indonesia, an education establishment designed to enhance capabilities to fight fisheries crime.
