New book 'Catching Thunder' launched: a thrilling account of Sea Shepherd's Operation Icefish
Sunday, 18 Mar, 2018
A DRAMATIC first-hand account of Sea Shepherd's pioneering Operation Icefish, has been put together by two Norwegian journalists in a sensational new book called 'Catching Thunder'.
It's December 2014, in the forbidding waters off Antarctica, Captain Peter Hammarstedt of the Sea Shepherd ship, the M/Y Bob Barker, heads a campaign targeting illegal fishing in the Southern Ocean.
The authors follow this incredible expedition from its very beginning. Yet even as seasoned journalists, they cannot anticipate what the chase will uncover, as the wake of the Thunder leads them to the trail of criminal kingpins, rampant corruption, modern slavery, and an international community content to turn a blind eye.
Captain Peter Hammarstedt stated: "While two Sea Shepherd vessels trailed the F/V Thunder, the world's most notorious at-sea poacher, in Antarctica; two Norwegian investigative journalists chased the illegal fishing boat on land. 'Catching Thunder' is an adventure story as thrilling as an Scandinavian crime thriller, exposing the relentless pursuit of profits by the criminal networks pursuing fish at the bottom of the world.
"During the 110 day chase of the F/V Thunder, across three oceans covering 10,000 miles, I kept international law enforcement apprised of every move that the vessel made. I also, maintained daily contact with two Norwegian reporters who were simultaneously uncovering a murky web of shell companies and mafia operators as they chased the story over more than two dozen countries, to finally uncover the mafia king pin behind what was the most notorious poaching vessel in the world.
"What inspires me most about the story of the longest maritime pursuit in history, the chase of the notorious poaching vessel 'F/V Thunder', is that while Sea Shepherd ships blocked the poachers every action, a secret Interpol operation tracked their every move and two determined Norwegian journalists dived straight into the heart of the story by catching the owner. 'Catching Thunder' is the true story of chase that didn't just cover 10,000 miles, but also over two dozen countries and every single continent,” Captain Hammarstedt concluded.
